Urbanization, together with the continuous growth of
the population under the current socio-economic development of the country,
creates a frequent migration from rural areas to urban areas for better living
standards. Consequently, this trend significantly increases solid wastes,
especially municipal solid wastes (MSW). According to MONRE, more than 50% of
total MSW (35.6 thousand tons/day) came from the urban area compared to 28.4 thousand
tons/day from rural areas. This requires waste management and treatment methods
towards smart solutions, maximizing waste’s exploitation as feedstock for the
energy industry and reducing negative impacts on the environment and human
health. Despite the
development in solid waste treatment
solutions, the waste-to-power
sector is still facing many challenges in extraction methods, finance, environmental standards, etc. Many questions arise about the future of this sector
to align with the power
development strategy and environmental protection & climate commitments.
With the aim to foster the efficient use of waste, follow
the “WASTE
IS A RESOURCE” principle to
protect the environment, and contribute to the Net-Zero target by 2050, Vietnam
Initiative for Energy Transition (VIETSE) has developed a potential solid waste
scenario in Vietnam and analyzed the technical solutions to optimize
this resource. Based on the output research, VIETSE created a visualization tool on the solid waste potential in Vietnam at the urban and industrial
scale to contribute to realizing the future potential of this field in the energy
transition with the goals of reducing environmental pollution reduction and protecting
the climate. This tool is expected to
support the investment decision-making process, develop effective waste
management and treatment policies, and contribute to the energy industry
development and environmental protection.
