There are challenges for the power system to accommodate a higher share of variable RE sources (solar and wind), which are resulted from their intermittency depending on natural conditions. Hence, having accurate and reliable RE power generation forecasting systems becomes a crucial requirement for managing and balancing the power system. The foundation for such systems lays in the quality of short-term and long-term hydro-meteorological and weather forecasts. Under this context, the Vietnam Initiative for Energy Transition would like to organize the Scientific Workshop on Meteorological, Weather forecasts, which is expected to be a forum for the presentation and discussion of […]

On 19 June 2020, the Vietnam Initiative for Energy Transition (VIET) held a virtual dialogue on the “Integration of renewable energy into Vietnam’s power grid system”. The objective of the dialogue is to share the results from two latest studies of VIET on (i) the integration of wind (onshore/nearshore) to the grid up to 2022 and (ii) the scenarios for offshore wind power integration to 2030. After each presentation (30 minutes), the participants had one hour to discuss the technical feasibility, economic efficiency and policies related to the solutions for renewable energy integration in Vietnam. The dialogue had 150 participants […]

By December 2019, the total installed capacity of Vietnam power system reached 56 GW, of which major energy sources for power generation are coal (36%), hydropower (30.3%), gas (13.3%), small hydro (6.6%), solar (8.4%) and wind (0.7%). In the first 6 months of 2020, we have observed significant changes in the power development policies of Vietnam with the short- and long-term orientations of the Party and the Government. Most recently, on 9 June 2020, the Prime Minister has agreed in principle to add 7 GW of wind power (Document no.693/TTg-CN) and 10.3 GW of solar power (Letter no.1968/TTr-BCT) into the national power development […]

As an emerging economy, Vietnam is seeking options to meet its growing electricity demand. The forthcoming National Power Development Plan VIII (PDP8) provides an opportunity to increase the share of renewable energy and to realize the installed capacity target for wind power until 2030. Vietnam’s wind resources mostly lie along its coastline of more than 3000 km, and in the hills and highlands of the northern and central regions. The Global Wind Atlas estimates that over 39% of Vietnam’s area has annual average wind speed over 6 m/s at a height of 65 m, and over 8% of Vietnam’s land […]
